CHAPTER 11
AND THE CHANGE BEGAN
As I let the words of my doctor sink in, I started to fully realize that if I wanted to lose weight, I needed to start making some changes. I still wasnât sold on the idea of counting or tracking calories just yet, but I was becoming more aware of what I was consuming throughout the course of the day, and awareness is where it all has to begin.
I was cutting back on the handfuls of almonds and bites of trail mix a bit. I was making my lattes with skim instead of whole milk. Baby steps like that.
I also started to focus more on protein. How was I going to get more protein in my diet?
While taking these baby steps nutritionally, I continued to strength train, and my love for it grew even stronger. I loved the challenge it brought, I loved the strength I was gaining, and I loved the confidence I felt.
As a result, I started looking into competing in a powerlifting meet. Doing something like that was way out of my comfort zone, but it seemed like a great goal to work toward. Everyone I have ever spoken to about powerlifting has had nothing but amazing things to say about the meet, about how supportive the competitors are and the powerlifting community is in general, and just what a great experience it was.
I was excited.
I spoke with a few people who did competitions, and they all told me they had coaches who trained them in preparation for the meet. Some coaches actually went to the meet with them and became their âhandlerâ â the person who helped get the competitor warmed up, made sure the competitor was where they needed to be on time, and their main support system for the meet.
So, I needed a coach.
I had worked with many trainers throughout the years, but none of them were powerlifters and I didnât have any local connections, so I began to think about hiring an online coach. I had never worked with an online coach before, and I didnât one hundred percent understand how it all worked, but I did know that I was highly motivated, and if I truly wanted to compete in a powerlifting meet, I was going to need a coach who understood the process. They needed to be okay with how little I knew about powerlifting, and understand how intimidating this would be for me. The thought of all this made me so nervous I thought I would throw up, but it also made me so excited I couldnât sit still.
One of my trainer colleagues whom I had met online (she was from the midwest), had competed in a powerlifting meet, and she told me all about it. This continued my excitement, so I asked her who she recommended me to hire as my powerlifting coach. She said, without hesitation, to hire the coach she had: a man named Jordan Syatt.
Well, I already knew who Jordan Syatt was, as I was already on his email list and got regular emails from him.
